چکیده

X-ray Flashes (XRFs) are, like Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), thought to signal the collapse of massive stars in distant galaxies. Many models posit that the isotropic equivalent energies of XRFs are lower than those for GRBs, such that they are visible from a reduced range of distances when compared with GRBs. Here we present the results of two epoch Hubble Space Telescope imaging of two XRFs. These images taken approximately 45 and 200 days post burst reveal no evidence for an associated supernova in either case. Supernovae such as SN 1998bw would have been visible out to z ∼ 1.5 in each case, while fainter supernovae such as SN 2002ap would have been visible to z ∼ 1. If the XRFs lie at such large distances, their energies would not fit the observed correlation between the GRB peak energy and isotropic energy release (Ep ∝ E 1/2 iso ), in which soft bursts are less energetic. We conclude that, should these XRFs reside at low redshifts (z < 0.6), either their line of sight is heavily extinguished, or they are associated with extremely faint supernovae, or, unlike GRBs, these XRFs do not have temporally coincident supernovae. Given the paucity of empirical constraints, the nature of the newly-recognized phenomena called X-Ray Flashes (XRFs) has been an open question. However, with the recent detections of radio and X-ray afterglow it is finally possible to study the largeand small-scale environments of XRFs. We present Chandra, Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and Keck observations of the fields of XRFs 011030 and 0204...

An Hst Search for Supernovae Accompanying X-ray Flashes

We present the results from an Hubble Space Telescope/ACS search for supernovae associated with Xray flashes 020903, 040701, 040812 and 040916. We find strong evidence that XRF020903 (z = 0.25) was associated with a SN 1998bw-like supernova and confirm this using optical spectroscopy at t ∼ 25 days. We find no evidence, however, for SN1998bw-like supernovae associated with the other three event...

Long-term flaring activity of XRF 011030 observed with BeppoSAX

We present the spectral and temporal analysis of the X-ray flash XRF 011030 observed with BeppoSAX. This event is characterized by a very long X–ray bursting activity that lasts about 1500 s, one of the longest ever observed by BeppoSAX. In particular, a precursor and a late flare are present in the light curve. We connect the late X–ray flare observed at about 1300 s to the afterglow emission ...

The supernova 2003 lw associated with X - ray flash 031203 ,

The X-Ray Flash (XRF), 031203 with a host galaxy at z = 0.1055, is, apart from GRB 980425, the closest γ-Ray Burst (GRB) or XRF known to date. We have monitored its host galaxy from 1–100 days after the burst. In spite of the high extinction to the source and the bright host, a significant increase and subsequent decrease has been detected in the apparent brightness of the host, peaking between...
